I Was Born for This

    

Before I could walk I was out on the boat with a rod in my hand. I grew up as an apprentice to my dad, “Captain Doug Samsal”, fishing on the plentiful inland lakes and rivers in northern Michigan utilizing a variety of techniques to catch an array of species. I was able to absorb unlimited amounts of information from my dad every time we got on the water.  Each summer we would take a vacation to our family owned island up on pristine Lake of the Woods where I learned the art of musky casting and walleye jigging. In Michigan, I would fish on a private 5 acre pond that my family stocked with panfish, bass, pike, and walleye. I spent countless hours on this clear piece of water, improving my techniques and discovering fish patterns, while truly enjoying and respecting the great outdoors. That passion and knowledge that I have has grown and evolved in my 34 years. Every single day on the water is a chance to learn something new. I even did a work study program in high school as a first mate for my dad and was able to get my first taste of what it truly meant to be a charter captain. I started my guiding experience at age 18 while working out of three top notch wilderness resorts on Lake Vermillion, Mille Lacs, and the Brainerd Lakes area. It was there that I was finally able to put together everything I had learned to target a variety of species: walleye, musky, bass, northern pike, crappie, and panfish. Then at age 20, I went through schooling to attain my captain’s license and finally have the opportunity to charter on navigable waters with my dad on Lake St Clair. This is where I’ve spent the last 15 years chasing down musky, smallmouth, walleye, and sturgeon.
